America (Drug Abuse Resistance Education)”.
Non-governmental, non-profit public or voluntary organizations may be admitted into a mutually beneficial working relationship with the United Nations by attaining consultative status with the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC). The rights and privileges of consultative status enable qualifying organizations to make a contribution to the work programmes and goals of the United Nations by serving as technical experts, advisers and consultants to governments and Secretariat. Sometimes, as advocacy groups, they espouse UN themes, implementing plans of action, programmes and declarations adopted by the United Nations.
In concrete terms this entails their participation in ECOSOC and its various subsidiary bodies through attendance at these meetings, and also through oral interventions and written statements on agenda items of those bodies. Organizations granted status are invited to participate in international conferences called by the U.N., General Assembly special sessions, and other intergovernmental bodies.
During its resumed 2009 session, held from 18 to 27 May 2009, the Committee on Non-Governmental Organizations had before it 142 applications, one of which was submitted by D.A.R.E. America, for consultative status, including 82 applications deferred from its 1999 to 2009 sessions. The Committee’s actions included recommending to the Council; the granting of consultative status to 36 organizations; not to recommend consultative status for 1 non-governmental organization; to close its consideration of the application of 4 non-governmental organizations; and to defer its consideration of the application of 102 non-governmental organizations.
D.A.R.E. America’s application was among the few receiving the Committee’s affirmative recommendation.
