2nd Generation Dance Company

ORGANIZATIONAL HISTORY

Second Generation Dance Company is a contemporary dance company that explores the culture and experiences of the African Diaspora through Dance Theater.  Second Generation is an education based company that seeks to enlighten its community on the importance of the contributions of all cultures to our society.  It also seeks to work within the community establishing accessibility to the arts in underserved areas through Inner City Dance Project; an outreach project for Second Generation Dance Company.

SG was founded in December of 1992 by Lori Wright-Amare.  It started with a company of three dancers and quickly grew.  It received it’s DBA in March of ’93.  It received it’s Articles of Incorporation in May of ’94.  Second Generation converted to the status of a pick-up company from 1995-2000 performing only for specific functions.  As of 2000 the company has switched from pick-up status into a full time dance company.

Teaching in the Community:

Second Generation teaches in the community at several HISD and private schools.  SG is currently in its second year as artists in residence at Yates High School.  They have taught in varying communities from pre-school to college.
