2017 Mississippi D.A.R.E. Officer of the Year Mark Gilmore

Officer Mark Gilmore has been named the D.A.R.E. Officer of the Year in the state of Mississippi.

Gilmore was honored Monday at the D.A.R.E summer conference in Biloxi.

D.A.R.E stands for Drug Abuse Resistance Education.

The D.A.R. E. website describes the program as “a police officer-led series of classroom lessons that teaches children from kindergarten through 12th grade how to resist peer pressure and live productive drug and violence-free lives.”

Gilmore serves as an instructor for the D.A.R.E program, teaching new officers the basics of the program. Kosciusko Chief of Police Herbert Dew said many officers at the conference had been taught by Officer Gilmore.

In addition to running the D.A.R.E. program, Gilmore serves as the School Resource Officer for the Kosciusko School District.

“We’re mighty proud of Mark and what he does with our kids at school…” said Kosciusko Mayor Jimmy Cockroft. “It takes a special policeman to be able to go into schools and build those relationships and Mark’s done a fantastic job with that.”
